COMMUNITY MURALS TRANSFORM SCHOOLS, VILLAGE HALLS, LOCAL HIGH STREETS, SUPPORTED HOUSING, COMMUNITY CENTRES.
AS PART OF THIS WORK SOPHIE OFTEN FACILITATES WORKSHOPS WITH THE COMMUNITY TO CREATE OPPORTUNITY FOR INPUT INTO THE FINAL DESIGN. TO HEAR WHAT PEOPLE VALUE, WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO THEM AND ALSO TO CREATE A SPACE FOR HAVING FUN BY CREATING TOGETHER.
DUNDRY VILLAGE HALL, EXTERIOR COMMUNITY MURAL
Sophie was asked to create a mural on this large exterior wall, to celebrate earth day. Following a consultation with the village hall committee she developed this design as a celebration of the abundance of nature. The joy it can bring, including some of our British plants, ferns, unfurling, sunflowers, daisies and Aster purple dome flowers. The design climbs up the wall, growing, blooming, flourishing.
EXTERIOR MURAL FOR TORTWORTH ARBORETUM
I was overjoyed to paint these boards amongst the beautiful trees at Tortworth, to celebrate 10 years of their restoration project. The design takes inspiration from the flowers and plants found in the woodland there. I painted this piece over two days, one of them being the open day for the public, a celebration event, which allowed attendees to come and participate in painting some of the mural. Hence my children, featured above, got involved too. I also have co facilitated a retreat day here.
INTERIOR STAIRWELL MURAL, SUPPORTED HOUSING
Sophie was invited in to transform this stairwell area of a supported housing project in Bristol. Sophie worked to a budget which meant that she didn’t paint a floor to ceiling design, but created a design that naturally grew up the walls. To bring colour, nature and joy into a space which felt too clinical. Working in an organised and tidy way to allow people to still use the stairs whilst she was painting.
BACKWELL JUNIOR SCHOOL
Following a mural Sophie painted at the sister site, primary school (West Leigh Infants), she was invited back to create a bespoke mural that visually portrayed the four houses; oak, willow, beech and sycamore. They also wanted bee’s featured to represent their school values which start with ‘Be’ curious etc… Sophie worked with assistants to get this completed in a school holiday. This mural transforms the play area for the students and staff everyday and is also visible from outside the school. ‘The natural and gentle colour palette is an uplifting and positive addition to the school, that we all love walking past everyday’. - school staff
CONTEMPORARY, BOTANICAL, ANIMAL MURAL DESIGN FOR WEST LEIGH INFANTS SCHOOL, BRISTOL
This mural transformed a red brick wall entrance way to this delightful little primary school in outer Bristol. The animals represent each of the schools classes and they are intertwined with a bold, colourful pattern that is striking from far away. The school said,
‘Thank you Sophie for the fantastic mural you painted at our infants school over Easter. The staff have told us that it makes such a positive difference to the entrance to our school and helps everyone to start their day with a smile!’
BOLD, COLOURFUL MURAL AT ST BEDES CATHOLIC COLLEGE, BRISTOL
This mural transformed three large unsightly blocks of concrete, acting as a stage backdrop at this Bristol college. Sophie created the mural design following a workshop she led with the students, where she got the valuable insight and ideas that were important to the schools values. This space was transformed over 5 beautifully sunny days.
